Rafael Escalante

Darien Student

Rafael Escalante is a freshman from Venezuela, planning to major in Political Science and Public Policy. At age fifteen, he started his political activism by joining Primero Justicia, a major political party of the democratic opposition, to protest the human rights violations of the Venezuelan government and demand free and fair elections. He’s been in the United States since 2019 as a political asylee. Rafael applied to the Darien Civic Engagement Project because he believes that only a well-informed and engaged young generation can protect the future of American democracy from the threats of populism and totalitarianism.
