Umehani Rehmanji

RU Ready Intern

Umehani Rehmanji, from East Brunswick, New Jersey, is a senior in the Rutgers University New Brunswick Arts and Sciences Honors Program. She is a part of the School of Communication and Information, majoring in Journalism in Media Studies, with a minor in Economics. She is on a pre-law track and is interested in the intersection between media and politics. Her primary focus in her work includes exploring the role of journalism in preserving democracy, as well as how this impacts individual rights and freedoms. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Eagleton Political Journal, where she has worked with a group of 35 of her peers in order to craft thought-provoking research articles across a variety of topics. Last semester she worked as an RUVoting intern, helping students across campus register to vote for the 2025 gubernatorial election. Over the summer, she interned with the joint Office of Assembly Members Roy Freiman and Mitchelle Drulis, where she gained hands-on experience of the inner workings of the legislature, and helped in finding ways to keep constituents informed. In the Fall of 2024, she interned for the New Jersey State House News Service, a non-profit that aims to report on important state legislation. She worked on site at the New Jersey State House, covering legislative news, congressional elections, interviewed Governor Phil Murphy, and has had multiple articles published in various news outlets. On campus she served as treasurer of the Rutgers Women’s Pre-Law Society, where she worked with the executive board to plan events, trips to law schools, fundraise, and support and encourage young women who are planning to join the legal field. She is grateful to have the opportunity to continue advocating for public participation in democracy as an RUReady intern this semester! In her free time she enjoys baking, reading, and spending time with her family.
